Who is
Sugarloaf Herb Farm?
My sister Linda,
brother John and I (Claudia) inherited our Grandfather's birthplace
when Dad passed. My Dad's brother, Clyde and Aunt Betty live on the
other half of the property. This place is magical to us, as children
we played in the woods and ponds and creeks. I made up a game called
Candyland and took my baby sister and cousin Carol to seek the fairies
and giants who had a great battle long ago. I hid candies under
tree roots and stones. I can't even remember all the details but
believe me, they did! They taught the game to my children. It is
a fond memory for all of us.
The fields have
been rented to different farmers since Grandpa stopped working them.
Tomatoes and soybeans are two crops that have been harvested
recently. My dream has been to create touring gardens of herbs
and perennials there and to allow others the experience of this
magical beautiful place.
Right now though,
I grow herb plants in my two greenhouses in the Mid Valley area. We are not
open to the public due to zoning issues. And, while I have beautiful
landscaped gardens here, they are just for family and friends to tour.
So I guess you can say I'm a hobby farmer.
I learned to make
soap back in 1999, when Y2K was big news. Convinced that civilization
was going to crash, I bought a kit and made soap. I had to throw it
out, but I was hooked! The complex chemistry that was happening in
that soap pot was a challenge and called to me. I made lots of soap
and got better.
I have been so
blessed by the people I have met while doing this work. I am grateful
on so many levels.
